These two locomotives were introduced with the intention of providing the future motive power on former LMSR metals but were found to be underpowered. They had a stint on the lines out of Waterloo in the early 50's about which I know little although I do remember seeing one.

They returned to the WCML where they survived for a surprisingly long time despite being non-standard and underpowered. They ended their days mostly on semi-fasts from Euston to Bletchley as depicted in one of the colour images in this collection.

The loco on the left is 46222 'Queen Mary' in commendably clean condition. Perhaps a good caption might be: "Have I really got to pull this tub all the way to Scotland?"
